Instead I like to look at it as a whole new side of Kanye West that wasn’t often experienced in the three previous studio albums he released. I would even go as far as to say this album is a revelation for Kanye West and his fans alike. I don’t think this album needs to depress listeners and I don’t think that the depressive themes should force us to label this album as depressing. His electronic beats and use of auto tune were truly unique and brought a new side to his music. While depression and heart ache are themes throughout this album, there are positives to it such as his personal change in musical style. This is most likely a song about his breakup with Alexis Phifer, and continues to show his dissatisfaction with his life. Another strong example of his depressive state comes from the song “Heartless” in which he talks about losing his soul to a “woman so heartless”. These comparisons lead him to realize that the life he’s been living isn’t the one he’s wanted to live and he wants more in his life. In the song “Welcome to Heartbreak” Kanye repeatedly compares a friends “everyday life” to his celebrity life through lines like “My friend showed me pictures of his kids, all I could show him were pictures of my cribs”. Along with the depression from losing his mom, I also get the sense that Kanye doesn’t feel very fulfilled in life, and that he wants more in life than to be famous. He used 808 drum machines on this album, so the inspirations in this album are written out clearly in the title of the album. This was a choice he made because he felt that this sound would work better in bigger arena’s. Kanye also changed his sound to more of an electronic feel in his beats and synthesizing his voice. Kanye dealt with depression for a long time after his mother past, and he showed it in this album.
On top of losing his mom Kanye ended a 5 year relationship with his then fiancé Alexis Phifer.
Kanye West had proven his closeness and love for his mother in many ways including the song “Hey Mama”. This was the death of his mother in 2007 following complications from cosmetic surgery. Most people in the music industry knew what the Heartbreak Kanye was referring to in the title of this album (and thematically throughout the album). Heartbreak, or success in the make?
